Leaders create a sense of excitement with their bold vision for the future

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of doing school drop off and pick up for a couple of my grandchildren. One morning as we were arriving, I noticed a couple of girls jumping up and down on the spot like excited puppies at the school gate as we parked our car. They had spotted my 8-year-old granddaughter in the car and called out to her to hurry up and join them. She was just as excited to receive the rock star greeting from her grade 3 besties and ran over to meet them. Now they were all bubbling with anticipation of a fun day together as they held hands and skipped to the playground.

I could not help thinking why us adults don’t get so excited about each other? I shared that thought with a few people, who either scoffed at the idea or explained that adulting is a serious business. But when I received a message from a new client saying he was ‘excited’ to get started with his coaching program, I thought that makes two of us. Why wouldn’t we be excited about what is in front of us? He is excited about removing the personal roadblocks that have been in the way of a bold future he is creating. I am excited about anticipating what we will discover. We will both learn new things along the way. It will be fun and exciting because we are creating a new future, just like my granddaughter did when she skipped off with her best friends.

Leaders with a bold vision for the future are excited about what we need to do today to get there. Their excitement rubs off on those around them and brings out the best version of their team members to own the vision and make it happen. It is both scary and exciting because of what lies ahead. Zappos built some of that sense of excitement into their ten core values. I must admit a personal favourite is ‘create fun and a little weirdness.’

  1. Deliver WOW Through Service
  2. Embrace and Drive Change
  3. Create Fun and A Little Weirdness
  4. Be Adventurous, Creative, and Open-Minded
  5. Pursue Growth and Learning
  6. Build Open and Honest Relationships With Communication
  7. Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit
  8. Do More With Less
  9. Be Passionate and Determined
  10. Be Humble

🙋🏼‍♀️ How do you create a sense of excitement? 🙋🏼‍♂️
