Are you getting the reward of giving?

It is the time of year when we think about giving.

If you are looking for a worthy cause, you could consider the work being done by The 500 Supporters’ Group, spearheaded by Patrick O’Brien.

Business leaders contribute $500 per year for the Ruben Centre which supports families in Kenya’s Mukuru slums, 10km from the centre of Nairobi.  This outstanding community-based ‘not for profit’ has been underpinned by The 500 Supporters’ Group for the last 20 years.

It is a personal favourite of mine because supporters’ donations are tax deductible and channelled direct to the Ruben Centre with every dollar going towards its operating costs in providing primary healthcare, education and community development, i.e. programs targeting child labour, domestic violence, and other significant issues, microfinance services, food relief initiatives, an FM radio station, and numerous other social programs and initiatives.

Just on 3,000 children are educated at the Ruben Centre, all of whom receive a daily meal which is often the only meal each child will have for the day.

This year The 500 Supporters’ Group has raised $985K taking the total well past $6M since its establishment.  While the Group’s members have met their primary objective of providing financial ‘bedrock’ for the Ruben Centre by funding the majority of its operating costs (now approx. $1.4M p.a.), they know there is always more that can be done, eg. in May 2018 the Group helped finance a birthing unit and an ambulance.

In the last 18 months well over 1,000 mothers have been delighted to deliver their babies with expert assistance in this clean, safe, caring environment.

For me, the reward is seeing a sustainable and replicable model being created to make a difference for those who need it the most.

Finally, thank you for all your support during 2019. Best wishes for the festive season and a fabulous new year.
