Securing the job of your dreams

How do you secure the job of your dreams? You know, the one where you cannot believe you get paid to do what you do.

When Gary* was made redundant from his job, he wanted a global opportunity for his next role. He met with people in his network about global trends in his area of expertise. He initially thought that the meetings were a waste of time; the main reason being that no-one had yet offered him a job. However, he continued with the meetings on the basis that he was exchanging valuable intelligence about his market.

A few months after one of the meetings, the same firm who were now putting together a team for a major acquisition in Europe urgently contacted him. They did not advertise the job or conduct a search process. They knew that he would be perfect for the opportunity and asked him to fly out a few days later.

He worked on the deal, which turned into a job in Europe where he spent the next two years of his life. He had secured his dream job, a global opportunity where he could not believe he was getting paid to do what he what he was doing.

But it did not end there. His global experience made him even more attractive and he was brought back to Australia for a five-year stint. So seven years of his career turned on a meeting that he initially thought was a waste of time.

The model below captures the three-part process that was key to his success. Align what you want with the value you offer and importantly with what the market wants and magic can happen.

The point is that if you gather wide intelligence about what the market wants in your area of expertise you will be well placed to offer your value whether through an advertised role, search process or a specifically created role like happened for Gary. That is how you secure the job of your dreams. You know, the one where you cannot believe you get paid to do what you do.

What does the market want in your area of expertise?

Best regards, Brian
